The world of modeling and high fashion has been closed to disabled and handicapped women in the past, but that all may be changing now, thanks to a new reality show on the BBC, which may encourage the fashion industry to adopt a more enlightened view of the handicapped.
The show is Britain’s Missing Top Model, and according to the UK’s Daily Mail, it involves eight women with differing disabilities competing, “to prove to a panel of industry experts that they have what it takes to be a mainstream model.”
In the past, in the minds of fashion executives, the concept of the ideal women, precluded using the disabled as models. Those like Debbie Van der Putten, a vivacious young beauty and contestant on the show, who lost her arm in a bus accident, were shunned aside and prevented from pursuing a career in the fashion industry.

The Comme des Garçons designer will bring forth an exclusive line of handbags for Louis Vuitton, which will be sold exclusively in a temporary shop at the Comme des Garçons store in Tokyo’s Aoyama district this fall, reports WWD.
Kawakubo said, collection would include two original “party bags” she designed, plus reeditions of two 30-year-old handbags and customized versions of two current monogram styles.
For those who can’t afford the iconic designer’s high priced creations, Kawakubo is creating a more affordable upcoming line for H&M.

Ruslana Korshunova plunged nine-floors to her death in an apparent suicide in downtown New York on Saturday.
A former boyfriend, Artem Perchenok, 24, told the paper that the two had watched the movie Ghost and that he dropped her off at her building at 5 a.m. Saturday. “She was a good person,” he said.
New York’s Daily News suggested a lost love was the reason for Korshunova’s being despondent.
Korshunova was from Kazakhstan and appeared on the covers of numerous magazines including French Elle and Russian Vogue. She was also featured in ads for DKNY, Vera Wang and Christian Dior among others and was hailed as “the next big thing” in a profile in Vogue three years ago. And she was known as the ‘Russian Rapunzel’ for her long locks.

According to Daily Mail, close friends were so shocked they refused to believe it was suicide.
‘There’s no way she would have killed herself,’ said friend Kira Titeneva, breaking down in tears. ‘She loved life so much. ‘She was my best friend. I talked to her Friday night and we were talking all the gossip.’ She added: ‘She was like an angel.’
