“Cindy McCain looks like someone has twisted her ponytail into a knot and tried to give her a face-lift,” said Project Runway’s harshest judge Tim Gunn.

He told NY Magazine that Michelle has Cindy beat style-wise, hands down.
“There is no contest!! I mean, Michelle really epitomizes American style, and she’s not afraid to show her shape, she’s not afraid to show her sexiness without being the least bit inappropriate. She’s just an alluring woman. And Cindy with her suits and she’s all buttoned up, she’s just soooo — she just looks like she’s duct-taped! There is just something about her, and in a way it’s a metaphor about who she is!”

I love frogs. This sort of fairy-tale frog that became a prince, and the chameleon who changes colors with his environment. Zelig is my favorite film. I understand that.
I can hang out in a sports bar with a bunch of straight guys and say ‘Go, Knicks’ and I can run around in the art scene and I can also be at the Met ball and be Mr. Fashion Designer with Anna Wintour. I can go wherever I want; I can be whatever I choose. “I can change colors–for my own amusement and, perhaps, the entertainment of others.

Beauty guru Laura Mercier revealed to Elle her key make-up secrets for winter. She shows how to wear this season’s berry lips, the way to create subtle smoky eyes, and how to achieve a velvet, satiny skin tone.

- If you buy one piece of make up this winter invest in a black eye shadow. It covers all the new season trends, plus black can be as vampy or subtle as you like.
- For a subtle smoky grey eye that can be worn day or night, use a base white eye shadow over the lids before gradually layering on black. For a more intense eye, brush black shadow over your lids, focusing along your lash line. Then dot some white in the corner of your eye to open them up. However confident you are with makeup, take your time and apply gradual layers until you get the right intensity.
- To wear this season’s berry lips, which appeared all over the catwalk. ‘I’d suggest a shiny longwear lip colour. Use your finger for a smudged stain or a lip brush for full-on intense colour. For a sheer effect use a lip balm underneath your lip colour, and for precision use a berry lipliner. This trend is versatile so it can be worn in different ways depending on your mood.
- Use a tinted moisturizer to keep your skin looking fresh and clean, followed by a high-pigment pearlescent cream concealer over your lids. It will give you a glossy polished look – the very fleshy look that was all over the catwalks.’ Laura also told us to ‘use concealer around your cheekbones and brows to naturally highlight your face’ to look like you’ve just stepped off the runway.

Beyond clothes, I see a deeper content in fashion, like an escapism, a way to escape reality, banality and of course death. Under clothes there is flesh and nudity, a soul and a skeleton, everyone is concerned by facing death or dealing with age by searching beauty, sensuality, pleasure.

“I was famous for wearing a little black Gucci dress. [Except] it wasn’t a little black Gucci dress, it was a little black High Street dress. It was incredibly cheap. I just accessorized it well and had the pose that went with it.
If I’m going to an event, it takes me about an hour and a half to put my hair up and have some makeup put on … I don’t have a stylist. I deal with that side of things myself.”

Sandals with socks are certainly up there. Generally speaking, it’s footwear trends. I mean, the Croc—it looks like a plastic hoof. How can you take that seriously? I know it’s comfortable; I understand that. But if you want to dress to feel as though you never got out of bed, don’t get out of bed.

“When the first prototype arrived, it had a big black sole. Dead. I grabbed his assistant’s nail polish and began painting. Immediately, the shoe came back to life. Red is more than a colour. It is a symbol of love, of blood, of passion. It’s like the handkerchief that an elegant woman dropped if she saw a man whom she was attracted to.”
